What this page helps you do first

  • Appendix content selection criteria
  • Appendix formatting standards
  • Coordination of appendix and main text

What is an appendix

An appendix is a supplementary part of the thesis used to place content involved in the main text but not suitable for the main text, such as questionnaires, interview outlines, raw data, and program code.

Not all theses need appendices; whether to include one and what to include depends on research nature and school requirements.

Appendix content selection

  • Questionnaires: complete questionnaire content used
  • Interview outlines: complete outlines for semi-structured interviews
  • Raw data: original measurement data before data analysis
  • Program code: key code for core algorithm implementation
  • Supplementary figures: figures that could not be fully displayed in main text
  • Other materials: ethics review approvals, authorization letters, etc.

Appendix formatting

  • Appendix titles use the same format as main text titles
  • Appendix fonts usually consistent with main text
  • Appendix headers usually marked with "Appendix A", "Appendix B" etc.
  • Figures and tables in appendices usually numbered as "Figure A1", "Table B2"
  • Appendix page numbers usually calculated continuously with main text

Notes for appendix creation

  • Do not make appendix content too lengthy; select the most necessary parts
  • Program code is recommended to use monospaced fonts like Consolas or Courier New
  • Text materials like questionnaires can reduce font size appropriately to save space
  • Appendix page count usually not included in thesis word count requirements

Frequently asked questions

How long can an appendix be?
There is no unified standard, but it is recommended not to be too long. The appendix supplements the main text, not to pile up materials. If appendix is too long, consider including only key parts.
Can questionnaires be placed in appendix?
Yes. Complete questionnaire content is usually placed in appendix. But if questionnaire is too long, you can include only core questions, or describe questionnaire structure in main text and note "complete questionnaire in appendix."
Does program code have to be in appendix?
Not necessarily. If code is a core part of thesis research, key code can be displayed in main text with complete code in appendix. If code is not highly relevant to research, it may not need to be included.
