What is a three-line table

The three-line table is the most standardized table form in academic papers, named because it consists of only the top line, header line, and bottom line.

Three-line tables are characterized by simplicity, clarity, and strong academic feel, suitable for displaying data, comparisons, and categorical information.

Standard three-line table format

  • Top line: 1.5pt weight, black solid line
  • Header bottom line: 1.5pt weight, black solid line
  • Final bottom line: 1.5pt weight, black solid line
  • Between header and body: 0.75pt or 1pt weight
  • No vertical lines in table body
  • Table width should not exceed page margins

Correct header writing

  • Headers should be concise and clear
  • Columns with different meanings need separate line descriptions
  • Units should be indicated separately, not within data
  • Columns needing notes can add note symbols in header

Table body format specifications

  • Data aligned neatly, decimal points aligned
  • Do not use "ditto" or similar abbreviations for repeated data
  • Missing data indicated by "-", do not leave blank
  • Horizontal lines may be added to separate sections if needed

Table note writing

  • Table notes placed below table
  • Note symbols use *, **, *** or ①② etc.
  • Note content left-aligned, first line no indent
  • Data source can be explained in table notes

Frequently asked questions

Can three-line tables be made directly in Word?
Yes. Using Word table tools "Table Styles" function, you can set border line type and weight. The key is to keep only top line, bottom line, and header separator, removing all other borders.
How to handle tables spanning multiple pages?
For long tables requiring continuation, repeat the header above the continuation and mark "Continued". Never split a complete table across pages.
Can vertical lines be added to three-line tables?
Standard three-line tables do not allow vertical lines in the body. If separating different categories of columns is needed, use whitespace or increased row spacing instead.
