VIP and CNKI detection principle differences
VIP and CNKI are the two major plagiarism check platforms in China, but detection principles and databases differ.
CNKI comparison database focuses on academic papers, covering journals, theses, conference papers, etc.; VIP comparison database besides academic papers also includes large amounts of network resources and published books.
Database coverage differences
- CNKI: thesis database very comprehensive, preferred for thesis plagiarism check
- VIP: broader network resource comparison, more sensitive to network content detection
- Wanfang: mainly journal papers, relatively smaller comparison database
- Overall: same paper usually has lower CNKI plagiarism rate than VIP
Same paper detection results comparison
- If paper cites lots of network resources, VIP rate usually higher
- If paper cites lots of theses, CNKI rate usually higher
- Difference may be small for science/engineering papers
- Difference may be larger for liberal arts papers due to more network citations
Respective advantages and applicable scenarios
- CNKI: suitable for thesis and journal paper detection, recommended for thesis as priority
- VIP: suitable for papers with lots of network resources, good for draft detection
- Wanfang: suitable for journal paper detection but database relatively small
- Use whichever platform school specifies, do not mix
Notes
- Schools usually only recognize specified platform reports
- Do not use VIP then CNKI, results not comparable
- Choose version matching school (undergraduate/master/PhD)
- Report validity usually 30 days, do not detect too early
Frequently asked questions
- School uses CNKI, can I use VIP as reference?
- Can be used as reference but not as final result. If VIP rate much higher than CNKI, indicates paper contains lots of VIP-indexed but CNKI-unindexed content, which may not be flagged by CNKI.
- Is VIP more strict?
- Cannot simply say which is more strict. VIP is more sensitive to network resources; if paper cites lots of network content VIP is stricter. But if citing theses, CNKI database is more comprehensive and detection is stricter.
- Can I use multiple platforms simultaneously?
- Yes, but results for reference only. Different platform databases differ, results not comparable. Recommend taking school-specified platform result as standard.
